Muslim Nomads of Adjara

During the three months of summer, the Muslim minority of Georgia in the region of Adjara, move up from their villages to their summer pastures in various mountains. The people of upper Adjara up to this day live according to the culture and customs of Islam that their parents left them coming out of the Soviet Union where they hid their faith, remaining underground, away from the police. Nowadays, they can freely exercise their religious beliefs but are marginalized by the rest of Georgia as they are perceived to be the outcasts of the Georgian nationality, for following a religion other than Orthodox Christianity. This project also shows a mountain that is both living but also dying due to heavy migration. The captured photos depict the last generation of these pastures, as the nomadic life of the Muslim people slowly fades away.
